Introduction

The Drowned Villages of the Scheldt project investigates the submerged remains of late medieval villages in the Eastern Scheldt estuary. Located on the tidal flats of Zeeland’s drowned medieval polders, sites like Tolsende and Nieuwlande offer a rare window into the historical human-landscape relationship in coastal environments.

As climate change accelerates sea-level rise and coastal erosion, these archaeological landscapes are rapidly disappearing. Using non-invasive techniques such as drone surveys, geophysics, and geoarchaeological mapping, our interdisciplinary team works to document and preserve what remains.
